Notre Dame de Paris

Notre Dame de Paris, the Paris Catholic cathedral, was begun in 1163 when Bishop Maurice de Sully decided to rebuild the old Romanesque cathedral. The cathedral is the probable birthplace of the flying buttress and is one of the masterpieces of Gothic architecture in Western Europe. Its stained glass and the huge interior are stunning artistic experiences of mystical dimension. Located on the Island of the Cite and surrounded by the Seine River, Notre Dame is a flagship of the Parisian landscape and provides a magnificent view of the city from the top of its towers.
