Preliminary Questions

The following library databases will provide useful background, pro and con arguments, and additional resources on controversial issues. Try searching a term like "air polution" to get more background information on the topic. Gathering background information is part of the preliminary research phase. Think about some of the following questions while you are gathering background information:

  1. What is the issue/problem you are trying to change?
  2. What factors may have influenced the rise of your topic of concern (i.e. culture, economics, environment)?
  3. Who are the main people or groups affected by this problem?
  4. Do researchers suggest some possible solutions to the problem?
  5. What action should be implemented to change this problem?
  6. What are some positive effects that could arise from allowing your proposed change action?
  7. What are some negative effects that could arise from allowing your proposed change action?
  8. Are there any legal implications from this action?
  9. What additional information would you need to implement your change action?

These additional questions can be answered using more specialized resources during the in depth research phase.
