Cult of Bacchus
Bacchus was the Roman god of fruitfulness and vegetation, and was especially known as the god of wine. He was the equivalent of the Greek god Dionysus. Festivals held in his honor were widely popular and were called Bacchanalia or Dionysia. The festivals of the Cult of Bacchus were banned by a Roman Senatorial edict in 186 B.C. (B.C.E.).
