Flying Home

The short story “Flying Home,” by Ralph Ellison, is set in World War II.  The tale primarily deals with racism.  This is the story of Todd, a young African-American man trying to overcome racial distinctions by succeeding as a pilot.  Also, the story features Jefferson, an old black tenant farmer representative of the traditional African-American man from the days of slavery.  Finally, there is Dabney Graves, the bigoted white landowner of Jefferson’s farm.
