Jamaica Kincaid is an African-American author of West Indian ancestry.  She is known for her novels and short stories that describe growing up on the Caribbean islands.  Kincaid’s short story “Girl” comes from her 1983 collection entitled At the Bottom of the River.  “Girl” concerns admonitions that a mother gives to her daughter about proper feminine behavior.
