Guest
“L’hôte,” a short story by Albert Camus, was published in 1957 in his Exile and the Kingdom collection. The French word “hôte” can mean either “guest” or “host,” and therefore the title is sometimes translated into English as “The Guest” and sometimes as “The Host.” The story relates the dilemma of Daru, an Algerian schoolmaster in a remote area of the countryside, who is asked to house an accused murderer for the night and take him to the authorities in the morning.
