The short story “A Hunger Artist” (“Ein Hungerkunstler”), by Franz Kafka, was published in 1922 and is part of a collection of stories by Kafka with that same title.  The story “A Hunger Artist” is the model of a disturbing parable and concerns a tormented artist-performer who starves himself to death.
