The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Washington Irving was a well-known American author who wrote a number of stories about the newly-independent United States. One of Irving’s more famous short stories, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” appears in his 1819 collection of tales called The Sketch Book. “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” concerns a character, Ichabod Crane, an early nineteenth-century New York state schoolmaster. One night, Crane supposedly is carried away by the Headless Horseman, and is never seen again in the quiet village where he once taught school.
