The Lesson
In this short story from the 1972 collection Gorilla, My Love by Toni Cade Bambara, Miss Moore, the college-educated resident of a poor African-American neighborhood in 1960s New York, organizes a trip to F.A.O. Schwarz on Madison Avenue for a group of neighborhood children. The story is told from the perspective of Sylvia, one of the children on the excursion.
