The Rocking-Horse Winner
“The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D. H. Lawrence, was written in 1926. This is a short story about a boy’s gift for choosing the winners in horse races. It is also the tale of a boy whose family is always short of money. His mother is incapable of showing love and is obsessed with the status that material wealth can provide. The boy is aware of his mother’s desire for money and he is motivated to take action. This story explores materialism in modern society.
