The Secret Sharer

Joseph Conrad’s 1909 story was first published in 1912. The “Secret Sharer” tells the story of a young unnamed captain who has just taken on his first command when he decides to help the escaped prisoner Leggatt. Leggatt has escaped from another ship on which he killed a man. The captain helps Leggatt to escape to shore while establishing his authority over the crew of his ship.
