The Shabbat (from Persepolis)
Marjane Satrapi (1969 - ) is an Iranian-born author who currently lives in Paris, France. Her graphic novel, Persepolis, was published in 2000. In this cartoon-based novel, Satrapi uses several short stories or segments to describe the hardships she faced while growing up in Teheran, Iran during the Iranian Revolution and Iran-Iraq War of the 1970’s and 1980’s. One short story, “The Shabbat,” concerns a Jewish friend of Satrapi who was killed by an Iraqi missile on the Jewish Sabbath.
