The Spinoza of Market Street

Published in 1961, “The Spinoza of Market Street,” a short story by Isaac Bashevis Singer, tells the story of Dr. Fischelson. Fischelson, a follower of the philosopher Spinoza, lives in the Jewish community of Warsaw, Poland at the start of World War I. The orthodox community finds Fischelson’s views to be heretical, and he loses his job. His subsequent illness and relationship with a neighbor who cares for him lead him to reconsider his philosophy.
