The Charge of the Light Brigade
Alfred Tennyson was a famous British Victorian poet who was deeply impressed by the heroism of British soldiers at the 1854 Battle of Balaklava during the Crimean War. He wanted to honor the men’s courage, even though their blundering generals had ordered them to fight a suicidal battle. The result was Tennyson’s stirring poem, “The Charge of the Light Brigade.” (This poem is to be distinguished from Tennyson’s “The Charge of the Heavy Brigade.”)
