East of Eden (the novel)

The novel East of Eden by John Steinbeck was published in 1952.  This epic history traces three generations of two families--the Trasks and the Hamiltons--that settled in the Salinas Valley in California during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The interaction between two sets of brothers and two families provides the themes of jealousy and betrayal as well as loyalty and love.
