Beloved

This 1987 novel by Toni Morrison tells the story of Sethe, an escaped slave, and her family through slavery, the American Civil War, and the aftermath. Sethe tried to kill her three children to prevent them from being sent back into slavery but managed to kill only one, her daughter Beloved. The story takes a strange turn when Sethe, her daughter Denver, and another ex-slave Paul D. find a sick young woman named Beloved.
