Ethan Frome

The novel Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton was published in 1911.  Ethan barely makes a living on a farm in New England for himself and his wife.  His wife’s cousin, Mattie, moves in with them and Ethan and Mattie fall in love.  Mattie and Ethan try to kill themselves because they are so unhappy.  They are severely injured and Ethan’s wife ends up taking care of both Ethan and Mattie.
