 Les Misérables

Victor Hugo wrote Les Misérables in 1862, and it immediately became a best-seller. The French word “misérables” can mean either “wretches” or “villains,” and the novel is filled with both. The plot concerns the pursuit by Inspector Javert of the ex-convict Jean Valjean against a backdrop of revolution in nineteenth-century France.
