Temple of Zeus
The Temple of Zeus at Olympia was constructed during the 5th century BC. It is an example of Classical style in the Doric order. It was the largest temple at 90 feet long until the Parthenon was built. It was made with limestone covered with stucco and marble was imported for the roof and the sculptures. Inside the temple was a large statue of Zeus sitting in a chair. This statue is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The first Olympians worshipped Zeus in the sanctuary before the Olympic games.
