Sidonie Gabrielle Colette was born on January 28, 1873. After she married her first husband, Henry Gauthier-Villars, better known as Willy, she began writing.  Her first books were the Claudine series, loosely based on her own life.  She wrote stories and novels, some of which became plays or films such as Cheri and Gigi. She received many French literary honors and was the first woman to be given a French state funeral. She died on August 3, 1954.
