Guide to Using Video: Is it legal to digitize VHS?

Is it legal to digitize a VHS tape and make it available as a streaming video in Canvas?

No, unless you have permission from the copyright holder.

  • Permission is occasionally possible to obtain for content such as a documentary from a small, independent filmmaker.
  • For a major film or television studio, such as Disney or the BBC, it is usually not possible to obtain permission.
  • For more information on the process of requesting permission, read Asking for Permission from the Columbia University Libraries.
