Art Images: Citing Sources

MLA & APA Guides

If you are going to describe and/or analyze features of an art work, then the image is a source and must be cited on your Works Cited page.

On the other hand, if the purpose of the image is mainly decorative, it should be captioned in the body of the paper, but does not have to appear on the Works Cited page.

  • View Purdue Owl's page on citing images on a Works Cited page.
  • Purdue Owl also gives advice on including images within the text of a paper in MLA format.
