Overcoming the Fears of Resarch

Research can be a very scary thing.  However the key to successful research is to plan ahead, make time, don't procrastinate, expect change, and keep thorough notes.  In addition, do the following:

  • Know Your Assignment:  Make sure you understand your assignment and your professor's expectations.  
    • Do you choose it or is it assigned?
    • How many pages are required?
    • What sources are you allowed to use?
    • When is it due?
  • Start Early:  Research is creative and unpredictable.
    • Set deadlines
    • Ask for help
    • Minimize stress
    • Start today
  • Research Process:  
    • Identify and develop topic
    • Find background information
    • Search library databases and online catalog for additional resources
    • Evaluate resources
    • Write your paper
    • Cite your sources
