NSE - Interpersonal Communication: Home

The following lesson explores select topics in communication. Such topics include the communication process, self-awareness, verbal and nonverbal communication, self-monitoring, and building communication skills.

Welcome

The New Student Experience course is all about self-exploration. In our course, you have the opportunity to explore your purpose, strengths, career interests and educational goals. Asking yourself "Who am I" and being intentional about discovering that answer is crucial to building a plan for success.

Regardless of where your life's journey takes you, one thing is for certain: at some point, you are going to have to interact with people. Therefore, it is important that you evaluate and enhance (if necessary) your communication skills.

This LibGuide provides an overview of the communication process and ways to increase self-awareness when communicating with others. Throughout the lesson, you will be presented with reading, videos, and opportunities to pause and reflect on your communication style. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Define interpersonal communication
  • Identify who you'll be communicating within the higher education environment
  • Describe your verbal and non-verbal communication habits
  • Explain how your verbal and non-verbal communication habits impact your conversations with others
  • Discuss the meaning of virtual communication and its connection to post-pandemic communication

Our hope is that you'll find this information useful in your interactions with other students, faculty, and staff. Additionally, you can apply these concepts to your personal and professional relationships.
